Session Sharing Between a Published Desktop and a Published Application

Organisations migrating over from XenApp 6.5 to XenApp/XenDesktop 7.x would be surprised that a feature taken for granted in the previous version was not available until very recently in XenApp/XenDesktop 7.x. The feature I am talking about is Application and Desktop Sharing. This is the ability to launch a published application locally from the published desktop if the published application is indeed installed locally. Prior to XenApp/XenDesktop 7.17 this functionality was not available and would result in a double hop scenario whereby another XenApp session would launch from another session host to launch an application.

For example, a user would launch their published desktop. From within their published desktop they would launch a published application such as Adobe Reader. Instead of the local copy of Adobe Reader launching, a session containing Adobe Reader would launch from another session host. This unnecessarily creates more sessions and causes a lag until the session launches.

Now with version 7.17 released, this feature is available and “on” by default. These are the requirements:

  • XenApp/XenDesktop 7.17 Desktop Delivery Controllers. XenApp/XenDesktop Service in Citrix Cloud is always at the latest level so nothing required here.
  • StoreFront 3.14
  • Citrix Receiver 4.11 on the published desktop
  • Application published on the same Desktop Delivery Group as the published desktop

Configuration

Receiver Configuration

  1. Install the latest version of the receiver onto the master image that is used to create the session hosts. This has to be version 4.11 (latest at time of writing
  2. Ensure that the latest ADMX and ADML files are copied to your Group Policy Central Store. These can be found in C:\Program Files (x86)\Citrix\ICA Client\Configuration.
  3. Create or edit an existing Group Policy and configure the setting found in Computer Configuration>Policies>Administrative Templates>Citrix Components>Citrix Receiver>SelfService>vPrefer.

4. There are three settings when enabled. These are:

  • Allow all apps
  • Allow installed apps
  • Allow network apps
    • Setting to “Allow all apps” will launch Win32 apps such as Calculator as well.

StoreFront Configuration

As mentioned earlier, no configuration is required in StoreFront but ensure the version of 3.14 (latest at time of writing) is installed.
